Ben Mark Baxley is 35-year veteran of public service. Graduating from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1989, Ben began his legal career with the Tuscaloosa County District Attorney’s Office where he served until 1995. From Tuscaloosa, Ben accepted a position as Chief Deputy District Attorney for DeKalb and Cherokee counties where he served for 12 years. In 2007, Ben accepted a position with the Alabama Attorney General’s Office where he prosecuted public corruption and violent crimes throughout the state. Ben also spent 3 years in the Opinions Division of the Attorney General’s Office until his retirement from state service in 2015
In 2015, Ben departed state service and accepted a position with the United States Department of Justice where he served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama. While there, Ben implemented the Smart on Crime initiative, served as the Re-entry Coordinator, District Elections Officer, Indian Country Liaison, and Civil Rights Prosecutor. In 2018, Ben was appointed as the Deputy Criminal Chief for that office.
In May of 2020, Ben left federal service and returned to the Alabama Attorney General’s Office where he served as Chief of the Opinions Division until May of 2024. On May 17, 2024, Ben was sworn in as District Judge of Elmore County where he presides primarily over juvenile, small claims, and district court civil cases.
